Back in 1986 Laurie Penton and a few friends dreamed of showcasing the new sport of Triathlon in the best venue around, Riding Mountain National Park. After a decade of innovative nurturing spent building up the race Laurie retired. Flash forward to last year when Deb and I had the privilege of taking over this event for the first time. As we look forward to the 25th Anniversary in a few years, our passion for this event found expression in a mission of going "Back to the Future". Going back to its roots means going back to what made this race so successful and unique in the first place -- the park.
Riding Mountain National Park was made for a Triathlon/Duathlon. It is without question among the most scenic tri courses on the prairies. Starting with the bracing swim in the deep spring-fed lake, on to the rolling bike course through boreal forest and ending with a rewarding run along the lake shore path one is challenged yet rewarded throughout.

As the Voice of Riding Mountain Triathlon Dave Markham will be in Beijing on August 16 serving as an official for the Triathlon Event, Race Director Ellis Crowston is very pleased to let everyone know that a very capable replacement has been found . Canada’s original Ironman Kirk DeFazio will be at the microphone enlightening the crowds and identifying the atheletes as they cross the finish line.
Kirk DeFazio, along with three friends from Ottawa, were the first Canadians to make the trip to Hawaii in the early 80’s and compete in the famous Hawaiian Ironman. DeFazio has competed through-out the United Sates and Europe, and is excited to be able to contribute to this great event.
“Captain Kirk” is now the AD at Brandon University and has become involved with many events within the community. He will be around all weekend and will be eager to share his stories on the early days of this great sport.

This year’s t-shirt is already a hot seller. Brandon’s Erin Cox has created a simple design incorporating the three events into the RMTri logo. The back of the shirt is highlighted with the RMNP’s 75th anniversary logo. These shirts can be purchased when registering, and there will be a limited number for sale at the Friday Night Rendezvous.
